Our Cuba Visit

Havana, Cuba — sensory overload and so inspiring! I can’t wait to tell you more!

Our View From Iowa

by Jim and Melanie

Between 22-26 October 2015, we were in Cuba under the auspices of People-to-People. Our local jazz station organized the trip with the assistance of a travel agency.

Soon we will post our impressions and photographs of the beautiful people and things we experienced. There is so much to think about. It is all a swirl in our heads now. We look forward to sharing the highlights. One thing for sure, Cuba is complicated. Perhaps that complexity is reflected in this photo of a typical pole in a Havana neighborhood.

I worked on Cuba policy when I served on President Clinton’s National Security Council staff. Needless to say a handful of hard line regressives in congress and Miami were able to derail our efforts to move toward normalization. I’ll remain convinced until the day that I die that we could have undermined the Castro regime by removing our barriers across a broad front. Nothing could have been more subversive.

It was pretty amazing. We’re still trying to consolidate our thinking about it. We were told many times we’d end up with more questions than answers, and that is so true.

Opportunity of a lifetime, really! It will be next week before we pull some things together. I’m working on a presentation in the meantime. thanks for your patience. 🙂
