So Much To Do!

Always plenty to do… I feel like this is my mantra, as I say it so often.

If you’re a quilter, you know that almost every task takes longer than you expect. From designing to sewing the final stitch on the label, it’s easy to underestimate how long it will take. Part of that is because the tasks are so familiar, and most are not especially hard. But quilts have so many pieces, and tasks are repeated so many times. Even if you only work on one project at a time, there are hundreds of steps from start to finish. And if you’re like me, with several projects in process, well, there is always plenty to do!

A short list:
1) Sew binding on traditional class medallion. (As you know, there are several steps to this, too…)
2) Cut and make binding for bright class medallion, and then attach and finish it.
3) Make back for XOXO quilt.
4) Piece batting for XOXO quilt.
5) Load and quilt XOXO quilt.
6) Choose fabric, cut and make binding, attach and finish it for XOXO quilt.
7) Trim hemmed edges off big tablecloth, which I’ve decided to quilt.
8) Make back for tablecloth, and so on and so on…
9) Check donation quilt for readiness to quilt.
10) Get donation quilt ready, as it won’t actually be “ready to quilt” as marked.
11) Load and quilt donation quilt.
12) Square round robin mini medallion.
13) Choose and cut backing fabric and cut flannel or batting for it.
14) Quilt mini medallion.
15) …

OH MY! There is so much more I could put on this list. And this is just current projects, not aspirations.

Yes, as always, there is plenty to do! What’s on your list?

I’m retired. Why is my to-do list so long? I reward myself with time to quilt. I further reward myself: when I finish must-do quilts I can make something new and scrappy. [Must-do t-shirt quilt #2 is half quilted!]

It’s good to have a reward system like that. Right now everything I make is just for me. (How did THAT happen???) So the rewards don’t work quite as well!! I guess my reward is in finishing stuff, because I get a lot of satisfaction from that.

I make this kind of list, too, when I’m feeling overwhelmed, so I can check lots of little things off as I go–it helps me see the progress! My list includes finish the hand quilting on my “Cot to Coffin” quilt, thread the heddles for the next weaving project, list some vintage linens on Etsy, finish reading blogs . . . I better get started!

Yep. Sometimes I find myself kind of lost, not getting much done. For the last month I’ve been fighting something and had lower energy than usual, so I could blame that! But making the list helps me focus. And marking stuff off the list makes me feel good!
