My First Finish of 2014

I made the 6″ churndash blocks last year, intending them for a different project. The colors didn’t work, and they looked too fussy, so I set them aside. Last week I thought to set them in a strip quilt. Its finished size is about 51×40″, a lap quilt.

I love this! I’ve been wanting to start another ‘small’ block project and churn dash was one I was considering. Great looking quilt!

There are several names for this block. But “churndash” is the one I learned first, so that is how I think of it. Other people may call it a “monkey wrench” or a “hole in the barn door” or “Grecian cross.”

      Thanks for stopping.

Thanks! It sure made it quick that way! πŸ™‚ Yes, now you’d think I made them with this plan in mind. But in fact until shortly before I started, there was no plan at all. I did need to audition a whole TWO fabrics for the setting fabrics. I tried an aqua one, and it was a pretty color but the print was too busy. But the lilac works well, too, I think. And then the purple framing strips finish it.

      Thanks again.

Love the purple that pulls together the disparate colors of the blocks. Maybe purple should be added to the list of neutrals. After all, Freddie Moran uses red as a neutral.

I think it can be very neutral, yes. I never thought of myself as a “purple person” but in fact I’ve made several quilts that star purple.

The other color I tried for setting triangles was aqua. It would have worked for color, too, but the piece I had was too busy and competed with the blocks.

      Thanks for taking a look.

Congrats on your “first finish”. Sometimes, that even beats finishing first!

I laughed when I saw that an alternate name for churndash is Grecian Cross. When I looked at the quilt, I unaccountably thought about Grecian vases, and that reminded me of “The Music Man”. Remember the ladies and their fabulous tableaux of “Grecian Urns”?
